Abstract This is an empirical study conducted to investigate the experiences of women on Gender Based Violence in Ixopo Kwazulu-Natal. Ten women were purposely selected for this research. Ten women were selected because they were directly involved in the incidences of the gender-based violence.

The study sought to understand the impact of gender based violence on the women in Ixopo. It also sought to establish if there was any tension between this impact and the existing policy regarding gender-based violence in legislations.
The study found that the policies do not adhere to a certain extent, to the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. The study recommends that police (SAPS) should create a police unit to specifically deal with the issue of gender-based violence (GBV) in each police station and improves the policies which deals with faith based organization and their teachings perpetuates gender based violence.
