Dr KP Masinga – ASASWEI President
Dr. Masinga holds a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) in Social Work obtained from the University of Pretoria in 2016. As well, they hold a Master's Degree in Social Work (MSW) Management from the University of Pretoria, obtained in 2002, and another MSW in Child and Family Welfare from State University of New York at Buffalo, New York, obtained in 1996. Prior to these achievements, Dr. Masinga studied at the previously Black only the University of Limpopo in the Northern Parts of South Africa, where she obtained a Diploma in Social Work and Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Psychology and Anthropology. They continued to study for the BA (Honours) in Psychology.
Currently, Dr. Masinga has been the Head of the Faculty of Social Work and Community Development at the South African College of Applied Psychology (SACAP) since December 2020 and spearheaded the Bachelor of Social Work degree launch.
They started their academic career at the University of Pretoria in 2008 as a lecturer while studying towards their doctoral degree. They subsequently joined the University of the Witwatersrand in 2018 as a Senior Lecturer, where they served until November 2020.
Previously, she worked in social work practice fields spanning medical social work, statutory work, residential care for children and youth, residential care for adults with intellectual disabilities, and child welfare services. Currently, they serve on the Editorial Board of Journal of Evidence-Based Social Work and Journal of International Migration and Integration. In addition, they have served as an external examiner for several universities.
Her interests lie in community development, social policy, social development, immigration issues, green social work, sustainable development, advocating for social, economic, and environmental justice, and promoting youth development. Dr. Masinga serves as the President of the Association of South African Social Work Education Institutions (ASASWEI) and Chairperson of the International Association of Social Work with Groups (IASWG) - SA/African Chapters. For community engagement, they serve on three youth development-related community-based organizations.
