Dr E C Erlank has been a senior lecturer at the University of South Africa since April 2017. She is the primary lecturer for two fourth-level social work modules. She is the leader and coordinator of a registered engaged scholarship project for staff and children of Child and Youth Care Centres, Tshwane. Her special interests are in the field of substance use disorders and trauma. She is also a certified trainer and facilitator of the International.

Social workers are confronted with persons’ experiencing extreme levels of trauma in South African communities. However, limited research on social workers rendering trauma-informed services in South Africa has been documented. This study aimed to explore the experiences, challenges and coping strategies of social workers rendering trauma-informed social work services in the Department of Social Development (DSD), Waterberg District, Limpopo Province. A qualitative research approach and a phenomenological research design were utilised. The ecological systems theory and trauma-informed perspective were the underlining theoretical frameworks. Semi-structured interviews were used for data collection from a sample of purposively selected social workers. The study complied with ethical principles. The evidence suggested a need for a trauma-informed organisational structure and workforce in the DSD. To build professional capacity, it is recommended that DSD’s current policies and procedures be adjusted to include an organisational trauma-informed perspective.
